Chapter 10

“I have news for you,” Lawrence said.

He rushed through the front door to the Three Sassters, ignoring the bell signaling his entrance as well as the small gaggle of teenagers standing in front of him. He merely strode forward toward them, slicing through their group as they miraculously parted for the excited man. Reaching out and grabbing a hold of Becca’s elbow, he began maneuvering her toward the back.

Smiling awkwardly, she waved to her guest, a tall man in a dirty camouflage ballcap with a lazy eye, and shrugged. Then Becca directed her attention to Lawrence. “This better be good,” she said.

“It is,” he said, shoving the kitchen door open and emerging through it. “It smells great in here.”

“Prep for tomorrow. We’re doing something new. Cheddar-bacon twists. Anyway, spill it,” Becca said. “You’ve got some nerve, showing up here like that. Hey, I thought you were on the hot seat, anyway,” she said, jabbing a finger into his chest.

“I am. Look, I talked with the new M.E. Nice lady. She obviously doesn’t know me or my reputation, or else she probably wouldn’t have talked to me. Though, honestly, she kind of reminded me of you. Has a really stubborn, independent streak, it seems. Is willing to play fast and loose with the rules when it’s the right thing to do. Just a gut reaction. So, anyway, yeah, she might have,” he said, shrugging.

“You didn’t come all this way to tell me- in person- your personality assessment of the new District M.E.,” Becca said, frowning. She glanced toward the door, feeling a twinge of guilt that she’d once again abandoned her staff. Especially now that David had gone home.

“No, you’re right. I didn’t. So, here’s the deal. The girl, she had petechiae in her eyes,” Lawrence said, smiling exultantly.

Becca shook her head. “I’m sorry. What does that mean? Pet-sketcha-what?” she asked.

“Petechiae. Broken blood vessels. It means she was strangled,” Lawrence said breathlessly. “Probably strangled,” he corrected himself.

Becca experienced a wave of dizziness. Her ears began ringing. Reaching out, she went forward, hand out unsteadily, and grasped for a chair. Slumping down, she placed a hand on her head. Closing her eyes, she focused on her breathing as she tried to silently command her heart to stop its relentless assault on the walls of her chest.

“Are you okay?” Lawrence asked, kneeling down and placing a gentle hand on her arm. He looked at her, his head cocked, concern shining in his eyes.

“No,” Becca said, laughing. She sniffed. Wiping a hand over her face, she looked around. She took a moment to clear her head. “It’s all just so sad. And sudden. I honestly would have preferred to just be blissfully unaware,” she said.

“I know, believe me,” Lawrence said, his tone hollow.

“How do you deal with it? How do you go out, knowing that you could be interacting with… with someone horrible? I mean, I don’t even trust Delilah anymore. Well, I guess that’s not entirely correct. I never really trusted her. I certainly didn’t like her.
